August 9 2012 Do Rules and Limitations Contribute to a Person's Happiness?

Rules and limitations can be irritating to a lot of people. However, they can contribute to a person’s happiness as well. I think they help make people happy based mostly on what I have seen and been through.
When I was seven, having no rules and limitations made me happy. However, I came to doubt this situation when I was ten and read a children’s novel, I Hate Rules, that showed me how they can contribute to a person’s happiness. It said that if there were no rules in school, the kids would sleep, study, and even go to their classes whenever they felt like it and that even if they were sent to the principal’s office, they would not receive any type of punishment since there were no rules regarding  what they would and could not do. Bank robbery, gambling, and drug dealing would be legal and the world would be filled with chaos.
Rules and limitations do not always affect us in major ways, but may make us feel happy in minor ways. For instance, schools have uniforms mainly so that students don’t get bullied for what they wear. Also, the faculty makes the rules as to what time the students should arrive and leave, and what they should be learning in every class every year. If these rules didn’t exist, most people wouldn’t have a proper education and would wonder as an average six year old does today.
Limitations can also contribute to our daily lives. For example, if someone came over to your house and rules didn’t exist, it would be perfectly fine for them to steal anything they wanted. They would be able to change ownership of the house, mess up everything, and do whatever they please. You would probably be very angry but what else could you do? It would be perfectly fine and legal for them. However, if someone did that to you today, they would definitely be considered guilty and face the punishment.

Based on these examples, rules and limitations do contribute to a person’s happiness, though the small benefits which they bring may not seem obvious in our daily life. When I imagine the world without laws or limitations, I only see disaster, which makes me happy that rules exist.
