August 13 2012 Can a Small Group of Concerned Individuals Have a Significant Impact on the World?

Many people, including myself, would believe that large groups of people have a significant
impact on the world than people who think small groups of concerned individuals could do
as much as a large group. However, I was absolutely wrong. It happened this year when I
watched a movie called The Help and on an event that took place in
our school.

The movie The Help (based on a novel) takes place when black people were treated very poorly
just because they had a different skin color from other Americans. They might be house
workers who couldn’t even take care of their own children because they were too busy with those of
their employers. Using different bathrooms and buses was normal, as was having no breaks
while they worked. Everything was as usual when a woman reporter decided to make a change. Being unhappy with black people being treated unfairly, she decided to write a book about those with different skin color from their point of view. Bravely, one black woman who wanted to help her gave an interview which led to about fifteen other women telling their story. When the book was published, every person in town had read it, and it soon became a bestseller. More and more people started to agree and began treating black people much more fairly than they used to. Nowadays, treating people with different skin color is considered racist and mostly everyone in this world treats them as well as they treat others.

Our school is very strict about bullying. We even have a week called Say Something when
you have to tell your friend or teacher if you have been bullied. Everything was okay until a group of students decided to make a fan club on a social network about a seventh grade boy
who pretty much didn’t have any friends in school. However, this fan club wasn’t actually
what one might expect. It was about teasing the boy for not having any friends
and being considered a loser in school. Luckily, I didn’t have an account, so I wasn’t’
able to see how it looked. Those who didn’t have an account didn’t know about
this, and no one had the courage to tell anyone what was going because they were scared
that they would be the next target. This went on until a few kids decided to tell the
head teacher in our school what was going on. Later, everyone on that social network
was supposed to inactivate their account and the ringleaders who teased the boy got expelled, others getting suspended. The boy gained a few friends and the kids who told the teacher won respect.

These two examples show that a small group of concerned individuals can have a significant impact. The result may be good or bad but one can be sure that either a large or small group of people can have the same impact in the world
